THE THESIS

Most shops build parts to the ten-thousandth.
Few run the business with that same precision.

Every shop owner knows the shops that just seem to run right — quotes go out on time, jobs hit the number, and nobody's holding the whole operation together in their own head. Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business breaks down what those shops actually do differently, in plain shop-floor language, without a consultant in sight telling you to "leverage synergies."

Why This Moment Matters

Manufacturing is having a real moment. Aerospace backlogs stretch for years — over 16,000 aircraft waiting to be built worldwide — and defense production can't scale fast enough to keep up. One Tomahawk missile takes 24 months to build. After thirty years of an unbroken trend sending work overseas, it's moving the other direction, and customers are actively hunting for reliable domestic suppliers. That window won't stay open forever. Shops that can respond with speed and discipline will define the next chapter of American manufacturing. The ones that can't will watch the work go somewhere else, again.

That's the real case for this book, and for reading it now. Building a shop that makes real parts, trains skilled workers, and creates jobs that support families for decades is its own kind of service — one almost nobody thinks to name. Do it right, and a machine shop stops being just a demanding job. It becomes a durable company: a family asset, a wealth-building engine, and a business worth more than the hours you pour into it. That's the opportunity sitting in front of every shop owner right now.

Paul Van Metre, author of Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business and co-founder of ProShop ERP

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Paul Van Metre

Paul has spent his career around machine shops, not in a classroom talking about them. He co-founded Pro CNC, his own precision machine shop, right out of college and ran it for 17 years — including pulling it back from the edge of bankruptcy in 2002. That turnaround is where a lot of this book comes from.

Today he's a co-founder and chief evangelist of ProShop ERP, built specifically for precision manufacturers in aerospace, defense, and other regulated industries. He hosts the Machine Shop Mastery podcast and Manufacturing Transformed, the ProShop podcast, and co-hosts MakingChips. Much of the book's inspiration — and its 50+ quotes — comes straight from the shop owners he's interviewed on Machine Shop Mastery. Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business is his first book.

FROM THE BOOK

Chapter 1: The One-Person-Deep Problem

01Walk the floor of almost any machine shop and you can find it in about ten minutes: the one person the whole place actually runs on. Maybe it's the owner. Maybe it's a programmer who's been there since the Bridgeport days. Whoever it is, if they took a week off, half the quotes would stall and the other half would ship wrong.

02That's not a people problem. It's a design problem — and it's the single biggest thing separating shops that scale, sell, or survive a bad quarter from shops that don't.

03This book isn't about working harder, and it isn't about buying software. It's about building a shop where the discipline lives in the process, not in any one person's head — so the profit shows up whether that person is on the floor or on a beach.

INDUSTRY PRAISE

What shop owners and industry leaders are saying

I've bought and run enough shops to know the pattern cold. The owner isn't short on skill or work ethic. He's short on a business that was ever actually designed, not just survived in. Paul gets that. This isn't theory from a consultant who's never made payroll. It's what he lived at Pro CNC before ProShop existed to fix it. If you want a shop that's worth more than the hours you pour into it, this book belongs on your desk. Not on the shelf.

Paul brings a rare perspective to this book: the experience of a former shop owner, the insight of a manufacturing expert, and the heart of someone who genuinely wants manufacturers and their people to succeed. The Machinery's Handbook has long been one of the most important references in manufacturing. I believe Paul's book has the potential to become equally important — not simply as a technical reference, but as essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how successful manufacturing companies are built, led, and sustained. This is practical manufacturing wisdom from someone who has lived it.

If you want to own or operate a machine shop, follow ‘Paul's path’ for your best chance of success. What makes Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business invaluable is not that it teaches you how to machine better—it assumes you already know that part. What it teaches you is how to think like a business designer instead of a technician always putting out fires. That shift is everything. The book is comprehensive enough to serve as a reference, practical enough to act on immediately, and grounded in the reality of this industry in ways most business books never achieve. If you're serious about building a machine shop that's profitable, scalable, and valuable—not just one that keeps the lights on—this book deserves to be on your desk and in your operating decisions.

I first met Paul as the owner and co-founder of ProShop, the ERP system our shop runs on. But it didn't take long to realize he wasn't just a vendor — he'd clearly cut his teeth in the trade himself, and he quickly became more of a partner to our business than a supplier. Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business is an inside look at the good, the bad, and the reality of running what might be the hardest business in the world. It's a genuinely interesting read — the kind that sparks curiosity for more rather than satisfying it and moving on. The best comparison I can make is to Warren Miller and what he did for backcountry skiing in the '80s and '90s — taking an experience only a select few had ever lived and turning it into something the masses could see, understand, and get excited about. That's what this book does for precision manufacturing. It's educational, yes, but it's more than that. It comes from a perspective that maybe only one person on earth actually has: someone who's owned a shop, been a vendor and partner to hundreds more, and interviewed countless successful shop owners of the modern era.

This is the book I wish existed when I started my machine shop. I could always find books on business, and I could always find books on machining. What I couldn't find was a book that explained how to build a machine shop into a great business. Running a machine shop is different. The problems are different. The systems are different. The way you make money is different. Reading this book, I could see every stage of my own journey — from running a passion project to building a real business. If you're serious about growing your shop, this book will save you years of figuring it out the hard way.

This is awesome! Great job … man does this hit home.

I've spent years pulling data from the Top Shops survey, and the pattern in this book matches what that data shows: margin traces back to job costing accuracy more than machine count or headcount. Van Metre backs the argument with real numbers instead of the usual advice to work smarter. That specificity is exactly what makes this book worth an owner's time.

Buying and running a machine shop is one of the hardest things I've done, and there's no manual for it — until now. Paul has done the work of talking to hundreds of us so the rest of us don't have to learn everything the hard way. This book is the guide I wish I'd had five years ago.

Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business puts words to lessons that many machine shop owners, myself included, have learned the hard way. It captures the struggles, hard-earned wisdom, and genuine satisfaction that come with building a successful manufacturing business. This book is a powerful tool for accelerating the maturity of any machine shop that wants to move beyond dependence on heroics and compete at the highest level.

Paul has been an inspiration to this industry through his podcasts, and his passion for it can't be replicated. What impresses me most about this book is how he takes hard subjects and makes them simple — using real people, real experiences, real advice. That's a rare skill, because it's far easier to make something complicated than it is to make it simple. Well done.

Scott Harms

Paul Van Metre understands that producing precision parts is only half the challenge—the business surrounding those parts must be operated with the same discipline. Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business is an insightful and practical guide for machine shop leaders who want to replace firefighting with systems, build a stronger team, improve profitability, and create a company built to last.

Jason Davis

Reading Precision Manufacturing, Precision Business has me looking at all aspects of how I run my own shop. It brings a lot of lessons and experiences from people who have already been through it into one place. Instead of trying to figure everything out on my own as I go, this book has me thinking about how I can apply the lessons and ideas from the many people who contributed to it. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who owns or is thinking about owning a manufacturing business. I will be reading it again and taking notes!
